Gestational Diabetes

Higher than normal blood glucose seen in pregnancy who are not previously being diagnosed as diabetics

Pregnant women: not able to maintain glucose level when challenged with exogenous glucose developed GTT @24 and 28 weeks of pregnancy .

WHO ARE AT RISK

  1. Women with family testing of DM
  2. Age : Women who conceive later in life none than 25 years of age
  3. Obese women lso (PCOS) who concive
  4. Indian women have been seen to be more prone to develop GD.

COMPLICATIONS

  1. Preeclampsia
  2. Diabetes later in life

BABY

  1. Excess Growth
  2. Low blood sugar at Birth
  3. Type 2 Diabetes later in life
  4. Death

Treatment

  1. Weight reduction
  2. Diet with Exercise
  3. Oral Hypoglycemic Drugs
  4. Insulin

Treatment of type I DM -control high glucose levels by

  1. Diet
  2. Lifestyle modification
  3. Insulin therapy (Most Important )
  4. Oral Hypoglycemic Drugs (Supportive to insulin therapy)
  5. Treatment for each complication of type 2 DM
